Grey, Peter (Grey Pete)

Homeless guy on the streets of Hampton

Description:

Peter is a broad-shouldered man in his late 40s, but his prematurely gray hair and beard and stooped posture make him seem older. He dresses in the nondescript uniform of the homeless: tattered coat, torn shirt, wrinkled pants, tired shoes. His eyes look distant and distracted one minute, then fiercely intense the next.

Pete’s not all there, and sometimes has to struggle to finish a thought or remember to whom he’s talking. When he’s coherent, he peppers his speech with Greek and Latin phrases. When he’s vacant, he sometimes hums the melodies of Gregorian chants. Pete feels protective and charitable toward his fellow homeless, and tries to look out for them and direct help their way when he can. He maintains good relations with the local police and has many contacts in nearby homeless shelters and social-service offices. Pete’s instincts tell him that there’s a malevolent force tied to the sycamore tree. He’s torn between a desire to confront the problem and the fear brought on by his past experiences. When the characters arrive on the scene, Pete fears they’ll involve themselves in matters that they can’t handle. He also fears they’ll draw him into the struggle he’s tried so hard to avoid.
